HARARE: The Zimbabwe men’s cricket team broke some records by beating Bangladesh by an innings and 85 runs in the only home Test at the Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.

Newman Nyamhuri’s four-wicket haul in the first innings helped the visitors bowl out for a modest 140, while Innocent Gaya’s maiden Test century helped them pile up 410 and lead by 270.

As a result, Bangladesh needed to score at least 270 runs in their second game to avoid an innings defeat, but they managed to post 185 all out.

The result of the match saw Zimbabwe win back-to-back Tests for the first time in over 25 years as they outplayed Afghanistan by an innings and 73 runs in the longest format.

The last time Chevrons achieved this feat was in April 2001 when they whitewashed Bangladesh in a fortuitous two-match series, while it was only the third time Zimbabwe had won Tests again, the first happening in 1998 when they shocked Pakistan and India in successive appearances.

Also, Zimbabwe’s innings and 85-run win eclipsed their previous best of 73 against Afghanistan in October last year.

Overall, they have won by an innings in a Test four times, with their other two colossal victories coming against Pakistan in 1995 and Bangladesh in 2001.
