LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi has officially invited former championship-winning captain Darren Sammy to participate in the 11th final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to be played this Sunday at the Gaddafi Stadium.
Following Zalmi’s qualification for the marquee clash, fans urged Afridi to call up the former West Indies captain, who famously guided the franchise to its maiden PSL title in the second edition of the tournament.
Responding to overwhelming fan demand, Afridi took to Instagram where he shared the story of tagging Sammy and warmly invited him to be a part of the finals experience.
“Brothers, we officially invite you to watch the final match of Zalmi (fan request) @darensammy88,” Afridi wrote.
Notably, Babar Assam-led Zalmi enjoyed a remarkable campaign in the 11th series.
They finished the league stage with eight wins and one loss and one match out of their 10 fixtures, amassing 17 points and topping the points table with a net run-rate of 2.324.
Meanwhile, PSL 11 is nearing its end, with debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen set to face Shadab Khan-led Islamabad United in Eliminator 2.
Kingsmen progressed after defeating Multan Sultans in Eliminator 1, while Islamabad United lost against Peshawar Zalmi in the qualifiers.
Zalmi have already booked their place in the final and will meet the Eliminator 2 winner in the PSL 11 Grand Clash on Sunday.
For the uninitiated, Sami was an integral part of the Peshawar Zalmi set-up in the first five editions of the tournament. He appeared in 49 PSL matches, scoring 691 runs at a strike rate of 146.39 and taking nine wickets.
He captained Salmi for four seasons, leading the team with 22 wins and 16 losses in 39 matches, recording a win percentage of 56.41.
His most notable feat came in PSL 2 when he guided Zalmi to the title with a win over Quetta Gladiators in the final.
