Bridgetown: West Indies have named Shimron Hetmyer in the squad for the second and third one-day internationals (ODI) against New Zealand after the all-rounder was ruled out with a back injury in place of the injured Justin Greaves.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed in a statement that Greaves missed the opening ODI in Providence due to injury and has since returned to Barbados to continue his rehabilitation.
Hetmyer, who last played in an ODI in June 2025, was recalled to the West Indies squad for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka last month, but did not feature.
The left-handed batsman was initially dropped from the squad for the opening three ODIs against New Zealand to complete his Major League Cricket (MLC) duties with the Seattle Orcas.
However, after the Orcas finished fifth in the MLC league stage and failed to qualify for the knockout round, Hedmeyer was able to return to the national team.
The 28-year-old scored 164 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 136.66 during this year’s MLC campaign.
The CWI added that Greaves will be reassessed ahead of the final two ODIs against New Zealand and the two-match Test series against Pakistan.
Greaves heads into rehab on the back of an impressive Test campaign, with a series-ending 180 against Sri Lanka. His performances helped West Indies to their first Test series win since 2023, earning him the Man of the Series award.
The board also confirmed that the squad for the final two ODIs against New Zealand will be announced later this week.
After winning the first ODI by 7 wickets, West Indies now lead the 3-match series 1-0. The first three matches are played in Providence before the remaining matches move to Bridgetown.
