England have announced their 16-man squad for the three-match ODI series against India, with uncapped duo James Coles and Josh Dungu getting their first call-ups.
The team sees the return of pacers Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood, while Jacob Bethel is expected to open the batting alongside Ben Duckett, which could shape England’s long-term plans.
Bethel, who recently batted at No. 4 in ODIs, previously had opening experience for England Under-19s and England Lions. His promotion comes after England experimented with several starting combinations following Phil Salt’s omission after the ICC Champions Trophy.
Since the start of last year, Duckett has had four different opening partners in ODI cricket. Jamie Smith, Jack Crawley and Rehan Ahmed were tried at the top of the order, but none could secure the role permanently.
England’s revamped batting line-up will feature Joe Root at number 3, followed by captain Harry Brook and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.
Will Jacks will continue to play in the middle order during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Jofra Archer returns to England’s ODI set-up after retiring during the series in Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Memories of Atkinson and Mahmood, with the addition of Dungu, resembled the pace attack used by England during their recent Test series against New Zealand.
Brayden Kars and Jamie Overton are out with arm and quad injuries respectively.
Garse has started training with the squad as England continue to assess their options ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, while spinner Liam Dawson has also been included.
Coles, a left-arm spinning all-rounder, offers a similar skill set and could make his international debut during the series.
India announced a full-strength squad for the tour’s ODIs with Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli all picked subject to Kohli’s fitness.
The three-match ODI series begins on July 14 at Edgbaston, before continuing on July 16 in Cardiff and concluding at Lord’s on July 19.
