KARACHI: Pakistan Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed on Wednesday is confident that newly appointed captain Babar Azam will deliver good results as the star batsman is set to make his second captaincy start in the two-match series against the West Indies later this month.
Babar, who earlier led Pakistan in 20 Tests during his first captaincy from 2020 to 2023, replaced the role on Sunday with experienced top-order batsman Shaun Masood, who can lift the national team to four wins in 16 matches as captain.
Babar, who was reinstated as Pakistan’s Test captain after three years, during an exclusive interview on Straight Drive with Salman Bhatt earlier this week, mentioned that he was honored to be given the opportunity to lead the national team and expressed his confidence that he has learned a lot from his previous experience and will lead the team with adequate planning and a positive attitude.
Meanwhile, Sarfaraz, who despite starting his tenure with a 2-0 whitewash against Bangladesh in May, has been retained as head coach of the national men’s Test team for the upcoming series against the West Indies, throwing his weight behind the 31-year-old batsman to deliver the goods for the Green Shirts.
“I have spoken to Test captain Babar and we expect good results from his captaincy,” Sarfaraz said during a media interaction here on Wednesday.
Sarfaraz further shared that the national team’s training camp for the West Indies will begin on Thursday in Islamabad, which he stressed would help address “fitness issues”.
Sarfaraz told reporters, “Pakistan Test team training camp will start tomorrow in Islamabad.
“There was a camp earlier in which fitness issues arose, some of which were resolved and others will be addressed in the camp that starts tomorrow,” he added.
