England pacer Sam Curran has expressed interest in filling the void left by Test captain Ben Stokes, who retired from international cricket at the end of the three-match home series against New Zealand.

Following their 2-1 defeat at the hands of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC), England are also looking for a new captain to maintain balance.

Brook has been backed to succeed Stokes as England Test captain, with Curran seen as his replacement despite his last long-form appearance before 2021.

The 28-year-old, when asked about his chances of returning to the England Test team, told BBC Sport that he is grasping the opportunity and trying to do his best.

“Absolutely,” Curran told the BBC. “Playing for England is amazing, I’m a competitor. Whenever I get a ball or a bat in my hand, I try to do my best, so we’ll see what happens.

“There’s no doubt there’s going to be hype around Ben Stokes retiring. He’s a legend of the game and has done a lot. Whoever comes in to take his place in the end will have a lot to do with it. At the same time, I’m sure Ben Stokes will try to focus and do better than them.”

It is worth noting that England’s upcoming Test match is the three-match domestic series against Pakistan scheduled from August 19 to September 13.

The upcoming series is very important for both teams as England are seventh with 38 points from 13 games, while Pakistan are at the bottom with four games to play.
