Amsterdam: Ryan Cook has stepped down as head coach of the Netherlands men’s cricket team with immediate effect, the Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) confirmed on Wednesday.
The decision follows the birth of Cook’s second child with his partner Emma.
Former South Africa international Heino Kuhn, who served as batting coach under Cook, has been appointed as the interim head coach and will lead the team during their upcoming Cricket World Cup League 2 matches.
“Coaching the Dutch men’s team has, without a doubt, been one of the highlights of my coaching career so far,” Cook said in a KNCB statement.
“It has been an absolute pleasure to lead the journey towards professionalism and help build a competitive cricket team with strong values.
“I thank KNCB and everyone in the Dutch cricket community for their continued support over the years. KNCB and the team deserve someone who can provide the full, consistent focus and presence they need now. I know the foundations are strong and the future is bright.”
A former South African cricketer, Cook took charge of the Netherlands men’s team in May 2022 and has overseen one of the most successful periods in Dutch cricket history.
“Ryan Cook has had an enormous impact on the entire Dutch cricket system by building player depth, fostering a strong team culture, developing coaches and contributing to grassroots cricket,” said KNCB Chief Executive Huib van Walsem.
“We are grateful for his excellent efforts that have yielded excellent results.”
Under Cook’s leadership, the Netherlands qualified for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, where they recorded memorable victories over Zimbabwe and South Africa.
The Dutch have qualified for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, their first appearance in the tournament since 2011. Despite finishing last in the points table, they impressed with impressive wins over South Africa and Bangladesh.
Netherlands captain Scott Edwards praised Cook’s contribution to the team.
“Ryan has been instrumental in the development of this team and Dutch cricket as a whole over the past four years,” said Edwards.
“His passion, professionalism and commitment to building a strong culture has helped achieve some memorable performances and positioned this team for future success. On behalf of the players, I want to thank Ryan for all he has done for us, and wish him and his family the best for the future.”
The Netherlands are currently third in the Cricket World Cup League 2 standings with 32 points from 28 matches, ahead of USA and Scotland.
