Mirpur: Pakistan were fined 40 per cent of their match fee and deducted eight ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate in the first Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The ban was imposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, who, taking into account the time allowances allowed, ruled that Pakistan were eight overs short of the required target.

As per ICC Code of Conduct 2.22 for players and player support personnel dealing with minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of the match fee for each over. As a result, Pakistan was fined 40 percent.

Also, under clause 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions, a penalty of one point is imposed for each over. It dropped eight points from Pakistan’s World Test Championship standings.

Pakistan captain Shan Masood pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanction, meaning no formal trial was required.

The charge was laid by field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Kumar Dharmasena, third umpire Allauddin Palekar and fourth umpire Kazi Sohel.

The regulation setback came after Bangladesh secured a historic 104-run victory in their first home Test against Pakistan.

Chasing 268 for victory, Pakistan looked good at 119/3 with debutant Abdullah Fazal and veteran all-rounder Salman Ali Agha.

However, Fazal’s dismissal in the 32nd over saw Pakistan bowl out for 163 in 21 overs for 6 for 44.

Earlier, Bangladesh scored 413 runs thanks to captain Najmul Hossain Shando’s century and Mominul Haq’s fluent 91 runs.

Pakistan replied with 386 runs, powered by Azan Awais’ maiden century and useful contributions from Abdullah Fazal and Mohammad Rizwan.

The result lifted Bangladesh to sixth spot in the ICC WTC 2025-27 standings after three matches with 16 points and a win percentage of 44.44, while Pakistan dropped to seventh spot with 12 points and a win percentage of 33.33, with one win and two losses.
