London: Matt Henry’s 11-wicket haul led New Zealand to a 253-run win at The Oval on the final day of the second Test against England on Sunday.
The win helped the visitors level the three-match series at 1-1 as the hosts comprehensively won the first match here at Lord’s by 115 runs, while the third and final Test is scheduled for June 25-29 in Nottingham.
At the start of the decisive final day, the hosts resumed their chase of 463 from 182/5 through stand-in captain Joe Root and all-rounder Jordan Cox.
Overnight pair Root and Cox could extend their six-wicket partnership to just eight runs as Henry trapped England’s stand-in captain for an lbw in the third over of the final day.
Root’s 77 off 145 balls with 8 boundaries was the top scorer for England in the second innings.
Following Root’s dismissal, Henry made light of England’s lower order, sending back Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher and Josh Tongue all for ducks in quick succession, while Cox single-handedly ticked the scoreboard for the home side.
Henry dealt the final blow to England in the 11th over of the final day, dismissing Cox, who had contributed significantly with 25 off 45 balls.
The veteran fast bowler took 6 wickets for just 29 runs in 18.1 overs in New Zealand’s second innings, taking his tournament tally to 11 scalps after taking 5 wickets in the first innings. His bowling exploits earned him the man of the match award.
Fellow fast bowler Kyle Jamieson supported Henry with three wickets, while Will O’Rourke took a scalp.
