KARACHI: Champions Multan Sultans on Thursday officially booked their place in the playoffs of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 2021.
After Karachi Kings defeated arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars by five wickets at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore earlier today, Sultans, who are second on the points table in the eight-team tournament with 12 points from nine matches, are assured of a top four finish.
A win for Kings means Sultans’ 12-point tally cannot be beaten by the fourth-placed side at the end of the league stage.
Sultans need to win their remaining league-level match against three-time champions Islamabad United at the National Bank Stadium here on Sunday to ensure a top-two finish and set up a qualifier against top-placed Peshawar Zalmi, who have won eight of their first nine matches.
Multan Sultans started their PSL 11 campaign with wins against Islamabad United and Hyderabad Kingsmen before suffering their first defeat at the hands of defending champions Qalandars.
However, the 2021 champions made a strong comeback as they won two matches against Quetta Gladiators and Rawalpindis respectively, but their winning run was halted by leaders Peshawar Zalmi who defeated them by 24 runs.
Sultans followed the same pattern of winning their last three matches against Kings and Bindis before suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Kingsmen in a high-scoring match.
