KARACHI: Former Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Amir has obtained an English passport and became a UK citizen, making him eligible to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Amir earlier hinted at the possibility of the fast bowler playing in the IPL once he becomes eligible, after re-sharing a post on Instagram mentioning the change in his national status.

Last year, the 34-year-old had spoken publicly about the possibility of playing in the IPL as a British citizen. Aamir became a UK citizen following his marriage to British national Narjis Khan.

Amir, winner of the 2009 T20 World Cup and 2017 Champions Trophy, had previously said he would not represent England despite his fitness, reiterating his commitment to Pakistan while opening the door to cricket opportunities for the franchise.

During an appearance Jio News In last year’s show Harna Mana Hai, he suggested that he might qualify for the IPL in the near future.

“By next year, I will get a chance to play in IPL. If I get a chance, why not? I will play in IPL,” Amir had said.

Amir also expressed his desire to join Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) if selected, and during the same discussion, former Pakistan player Ahmed Shehzad noted that they could benefit from Amir’s experience, especially in strengthening their bowling attack.

“RCB needs a bowler like Amir to fix their bowling problems. They have a strong batting unit but their bowling is always a concern. If Amir plays for RCB, they will win the title,” said Shehzad.

It is noteworthy that Pakistani players have not participated in the IPL since 2008 due to the rift in the political relationship between Pakistan and India.

Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood is the only Pakistani-born cricketer to feature in the IPL while holding British citizenship.
