LAHORE: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to expand from six to eight teams as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has completed technical evaluations of proposals submitted by interested parties. news reported on Thursday.
The rights auction is scheduled to take place on January 8 at the Jinnah Convention Center in Islamabad.
Among the confirmed bidders is the Tareen Group led by businessman Ali Khan Tareen.
Tareen had previously bought the Multan Sultans franchise in 2018 and turned into one of the PSL’s most consistent performers, winning the title in 2021 and reaching multiple finals.
However, relations between Tareen and the PCB soured over renewal terms and administrative issues. He was the only owner not to grant a 10-year extension, and the controversy escalated after the PCB issued a legal notice over contract violations.
In late 2025, Tareen announced her exit. With his exit taking effect at the end of the year, he is now eligible to bid for one of the new owners.
Inverex Group, one of Pakistan’s leading renewable energy companies, has also applied for bidding rights, indicating growing corporate interest in PSL’s expansion. Karachi-based VGO TEL, headed by CEO Naveed Gaba, has also submitted its application.
Hamza Majeed-led OZ Group has formally joined the fray to further intensify the competition. Majeed has previously demonstrated a strong commitment to sports investment, making OZ Group a strong contender.
Once confirmed, the successful bidders will have the opportunity to select their home city from PCB’s approved list which includes Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad and Gilgit.
