Melbourne: Melbourne Stars captain Marcus Stoinis on Thursday lost his cool after dismissing Sydney Sixers star Babar Azam during their Big Bash League (PBL) match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday.
On the third delivery of the seventh over, Stonis bowled a fast full-length, which formed slightly after impact that overcame Babur’s defence.
The right-handed batsman tried to play across the line on the front foot and closed the face of the bat too early, completely missing the line and length of the ball, resulting in it clipping his front leg.
Stonis immediately roared to appeal, immediately convincing the on-field umpire, who raised his index finger to dismiss Babur, and the Stars captain enthused, “See you later, Babar! See you later, brother!”
Meanwhile, the star batter, frustrated with his shot selection, had a brief discussion with batting partner Josh Phillips before deciding against challenging the decision.
The dismissal marked the end of Babbar’s struggles in Greece, and he returned after scoring just 14 runs off 17 balls.
Signed outright by the Sydney Sixers, Babar has struggled to find his rhythm in the ongoing tournament as he amassed 145 runs in seven innings at a paltry average of 24.16 and a strike rate of 108.20 with the help of two half-centuries.
However, Babar’s poor performance with the bat in the aforementioned match did not bother the Sixers as the visitors cruised to a six-wicket win against the Stars, with Ben Dwarshuis’ four wickets and Philip’s anchor in the run chase scoring 35 runs.
