Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott looks on during the Afghanistan ICC Men’s T20 World Cup India & Sri Lanka 2026 net session at MA Chidambaram Stadium on February 18, 2026 in Chennai, India.

Dublin: Cricket Ireland announced on Tuesday that it has appointed former Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott as a short-term consultant to the Ireland men’s team ahead of the one-day series against Afghanistan.

Trott, who stepped down as Afghanistan’s head coach following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, will join Ireland next week for a 14-day consultation.

The former England batsman will assist Ireland in their preparations for the five-match ODI series against Afghanistan and provide tactical input on match days during the opening two matches.

Drott enjoyed a successful spell with Afghanistan, leading the side to historic achievements, including their first ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final appearance in 2024.

Cricket Ireland hopes the appointment will not only strengthen the team’s planning for the Afghanistan series, but also contribute to its preparations for the ICC Men’s World Cup qualifiers in early 2027.

Director of High Performance Graeme West welcomed the appointment, highlighting the value of Drott’s recent experience with the Afghanistan side.

“This is a rare opportunity to bring a world-class coach into a senior team environment, providing him with current knowledge of the opposition,” West said.

“Having worked with the Afghanistan team, Jonathan is in the right place to support our strategic planning for the series and to provide a fresh perspective to our players and staff, broadening their skills, knowledge and understanding of 50-over cricket,” he added.

Ireland will begin their five-match ODI series against Afghanistan on August 5 at Brady.

  • 1st ODI: August 5 – Roti
  • 2nd ODI: August 7 – Roti
  • 3rd ODI: August 10 – Stormont
  • 4th ODI: August 12 – Stormont
