Bali: Indonesia’s 28-year-old right-arm fast bowler Kede Priyantana on Tuesday created history by becoming the first cricketer to take five wickets in a single over in a T20 International.
He achieved this feat in the first T20I against Cambodia in Bali.
Defending a target of 168, Indonesia were firmly in control, but by the end of the 15th over, Cambodia had a chance outside and the scoreboard read 106 for 5.
Making his attacking debut in his first over, Priyanthana took a hat-trick by dismissing Shah Abrar Hussain, Nirmaljit Singh and Santhoon Rattanak in the first three balls.
After bowling a dot ball, the fast bowler took Mongdara Chok and Bel Wennak to complete an extraordinary five-wicket haul.
Cambodia managed just one run in that over – a wide delivery between the last two wickets – and were eventually bowled 60 runs short of the target.
Earlier in the match, Priyanthana scored six runs off 11 balls while opening the innings alongside wicketkeeper-batsman Dharma Kesuma.
Kesuma anchored Indonesia’s innings with an unbeaten 110 off 68 balls with 8 fours and 6 sixes.
Although Priyanthana’s feat is a first in international cricket, the feat of taking five wickets in a single over has happened twice before in men’s T20Is.
While Bangladesh fast bowler Al-Amin Hossain played for UCB-BCB XI against Abahani Limited in the 2013-14 Victory Day T20 Trophy, Karnataka’s Abhimanyu Mithun accomplished the feat in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20 semi-final against Haryana.
Prior to this match, there were 14 instances of bowlers taking four wickets in an over in T20Is, most notably Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga’s famous four-ball haul against New Zealand in 2019.
