Mount Maunganui: New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham etched their names in the history books by scoring centuries in each innings of the Test match on Sunday.

The opening pair achieved this milestone during the final day of the ongoing third home Test against the West Indies at the Bay Oval here.

After posting a 323-run opening partnership in the first innings of the ongoing tournament, Conway and Latham followed up with 100 and 101 runs respectively in the subsequent matches, continuing their feat of becoming the first opening pair to score a century in each first-class innings.

Overall, it is the fourth time a pair of batsmen have scored centuries in each innings of a Test match.

Earlier Sri Lanka’s Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis against Bangladesh in 2024, Pakistan’s Azhar Ali and Misbah-ul-Haq against Australia in 2014 and Baggy Greens’ Ian and Greg Chappell against New Zealand in 1974 achieved this unique mark.

Conway and Latham also broke the record for the highest total by an opener in a Test as they combined for 565 runs, 15 more than the previous record held by South Africa’s Graeme Smith and Herschel Gibbs.

Also, Devon Conway registered several personal records to his name as he became the 10th batsman in Test cricket history to score a double century and a century in the same match, joining the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara and Kumar Sangakkara.

The 34-year-old scored 327 runs, which is now the third highest by a New Zealand batsman in a Test, behind Stephen Fleming’s 343 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2003 and Martin Crowe’s 329 against the same opposition in Wellington in 1991.
