KARACHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has contacted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) seeking clarification on footage of their former Test captain Ben Stokes telling his teammates about his retirement from international cricket, English media reported on Wednesday.
The ECB made public Stokes’ retirement from international cricket on day four of the third and final Test of the domestic series against New Zealand by sharing footage on social media.
For the uninitiated, Section 2.2.11 of the PMOA Minimum Standards states that National Cricket Associations: “Ensure that no fixed or temporary video cameras or other recording devices are installed in any dressing room used by teams for the purpose of broadcasting video or audio footage.”
As a result, the ICC sent a letter to the ECB on Saturday and said the cricket board breached the rule by recording and broadcasting footage and audio of Stokes’ address before the end of the Test.
The report added that the ICC had earlier informed the ECB that any footage taken at the PMOA should not carry audio or be released before the end of the match.
Notably, Stokes, speaking to broadcasters at the end of the final day of the deciding Test, also explained the rationale behind the public announcement during the play, sharing that it was a “plan” between his agents and the ECB.
“I said, ‘You work with my colleagues Michael Lump and Neil Fairbrother, you come up with a plan,'” Stokes had said.
