Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday fined the West Indies men’s cricket team for maintaining a slow over rate in the second Test of the ongoing domestic series against Sri Lanka in North Sound.
According to the apex body, the hosts were adjudged to be two overs short of the target and were fined 10 per cent of their match fee and deducted two ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points.
The sanction was submitted by the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees Javakal Srinath after consideration of time.
Under ICC World Test Championship (WTC) playing conditions, teams deduct one championship point for each over.
Additionally, the ICC Code of Conduct stipulates a fine of 5 percent of the match fee for each over, with a maximum fine of 50 percent.
The concession took West Indies’ WTC 2025-27 points tally to 18 and win percentage to 15, but they were eighth in the standings ahead of bottom-placed Pakistan for the two-match series in July-August.
West Indies captain Roston Chase pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanction, thus obviating the need for a formal trial, while field umpires Paul Reiffel and Ahsan Raza, third umpire Sharbuttullah Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Dayton Buttler were charged.
The second Test between the West Indies and Sri Lanka ended in a draw, and as the hosts won the opener by an innings and 217 runs, they recorded their first series win over the island nation in the long format after a 23-year wait.
