London: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed the appointment of former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as England Men’s Test head coach, with Joe Root returning as Test captain ahead of a new era for the national team.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in world cricket, Fleming takes over following an 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he guided the franchise to five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles and a record-equalling 10 finals appearances.
The 53-year-old enjoyed an illustrious playing career, captaining New Zealand in a then-record 80 Tests and leading his country to 28 victories – the most by a New Zealand Test captain.
During his county career, he represented Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, winning Nottinghamshire’s first County Championship title in 18 years in 2005.
The selection committee unanimously approved the former New Zealand captain following what the ECB described as a rigorous recruitment process involving a number of high-profile candidates.
Although appointed immediately, Fleming will officially take over as coach after the start of England’s Rodsey Test series against Pakistan.
Marcus Trescothick will oversee the interim head coach for the opening part of the series, allowing Fleming time with his family in New Zealand after ending his long-term stint with CSK earlier this month.
He is expected to arrive in the United Kingdom later this summer before starting preparations for England’s Test tour of South Africa.
Meanwhile, Root returned to the captaincy after previously leading England in 65 Tests, during which he claimed 27 victories – both national records.
The Yorkshire batsman first captained England between 2017 and 2022 and briefly resumed the role on an interim basis during the Rodsey Test series against New Zealand this summer.
Speaking after his appointment, Fleming expressed his excitement at taking on one of cricket’s most prestigious coaching roles.
“I am incredibly pleased to be joining England as Test coach. It is one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket and I am honored to have been appointed,” said Fleming.
He hailed the progress made under former head coach Brendon McCullum and ex-captain Ben Stokes, while outlining his ambition to build on sustained success.
“I look forward to building on the gains of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes and working with the players. Of course, the ambition is to win now, but equally important is ensuring the team excels for the medium and long-term future.”
Fleming also highlighted his interest in working with Rudd and rising star Harry Brooke.
“I’m especially looking forward to working with Joe Root as captain. He’s a generational talent, he’s already achieved a lot and I’m sure there’s a lot more to come from him.”
“I am also delighted to be working with Harry Brook. Great players are never finished products and helping Harry continue to develop his extraordinary talent and leadership will be an important part of this journey.”
Reflecting on his own experiences as an international captain, Fleming said English cricket played a significant role in rekindling his passion for the game.
“I know what it’s like to carry the weight of leadership in international cricket. When it happened to me, winning the county championship with Nottinghamshire reignited my love for the game. English cricket gave me that and the opportunity to give something back.”
Root described his return to captaincy as an honor and a new challenge.
“It is a great honor and privilege to be asked to be the England Men’s Test captain again. Being a Test captain is a tough but very rewarding job. After returning to the role last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players.”
She said working with Fleming was a big boost.
“Stephen has long proven himself to be an exceptional leader with a tremendous knowledge of the sport. I look forward to working with him and creating a successful environment.”
England Men’s managing director Rob Key welcomed Fleming’s appointment, describing him as the ideal candidate to showcase the team’s potential.
“Stephen Fleming is one of the most respected figures in cricket and we are fortunate to have someone of his caliber ready to take on the challenge of leading England’s Test team.”
“I believe he is the right person to turn a team full of talent into a world-class team.”
ECB Chief Executive Richard Gold echoed those sentiments, saying the board was pleased to secure Fleming’s services.
“Stephen is one of the best coaches in world cricket and has a track record of creating successful long-term environments. We are confident that his leadership alongside Joe Root will take the England Test team into an exciting new chapter.”
