MELBOURNE: Cricket Australia has released the complete schedule of the 2026-27 Big Bash League (PBL 16), with the Christmas Eve fixture, extended presence in Canberra and the January 26 final among the highlights of the tournament.
Christmas Eve cricket will return to the domestic calendar for the first time in four years, with the Melbourne Renegades set to host the Hobart Hurricanes under lights at Junction Oval on December 24.
The 44-match tournament kicks off with the league’s historic first match in India on December 12, when Melbourne Renegades take on defending champions Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The match will be played immediately after the fourth day of the inaugural Trans-Tasman Trophy Test. Australia’s opening night of the competition will take place on December 15, when the Brisbane Heat host the Sydney Sixers at the Cuppa.
With matches scheduled every evening except Christmas Day, fans can expect nightly BBL action throughout the season. The regular season concludes with doubleheaders on January 16 and 17.
The BBL 16 final will be played on January 26, with a reserve day available if required. The format of the four-team finals remains unchanged, starting with the qualifiers on January 19 and the title being decided a week later.
Cricket Australia scheduled the final to avoid clashing with the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur from January 21 to 25, while also taking advantage of Australia’s public holiday on January 26.
Many of Australia’s in-form stars are unlikely to feature in the latter stages of the tournament, with the national Test team expected to leave for India immediately after completing the four-match Trans-Tasman Trophy series against New Zealand, which ends in Sydney on January 8.
The BBL 16 schedule has been designed to significantly reduce interstate travel, with teams facing minimal travel demands across the four seasons. The fixture list has the fewest instances of teams playing two matches within three days, while no team has had to play three matches within five days.
Cricket Australia has introduced an extra day between the Challenger and the final to avoid a repeat of last season’s demanding travel schedule. Runners-up Sydney Sixers were forced to fly across the country to Perth three times in six days during the knockout stage of BBL 15.
Canberra will host its highest number of BBL fixtures in a season outside of the Covid-affected BBL 10 campaign.
The Sydney Thunder will play home matches at Manuka Oval on December 16 and January 11, while the Sydney Sixers will host the Adelaide Strikers on January 3 due to the unavailability of the Sydney Cricket Ground due to the fourth Test between Australia and New Zealand.
The Sixers will not travel to Perth during the regular season and, for the first time in five years, will not host a home game in Coffs Harbour.
Melbourne will host nine matches this season, up from seven last summer, including three prime-time matches at Junction Oval. Both the Melbourne derby matches between the Renegades and the Melbourne Stars will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The schedule includes marquee fixtures on Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The Adelaide Strikers will continue their annual New Year tradition by hosting the Melbourne Stars at Adelaide Oval.
All eight franchises will play home matches before Christmas and in the final week of the regular season, ensuring each club has home support at both ends of the campaign.
