Dhaka: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (PCB) is mulling moving away from a format-centric captaincy for its men’s team and instead reverting to separate white-ball and red-ball captains, international media reported on Monday.
According to a report by an international cricket news website, veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das, who is currently the T20I captain, is likely to hand over the ODI charge from Mehdi Hasan Miraz, while Nazmul Hossain will continue as the Test captain.
The plan will be discussed on Wednesday during BCB’s board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, the report added.
For the uninitiated, the development, according to an earlier report by the website, had claimed that Miraz had run out of time as Bangladesh’s ODI captain despite the board extending his tenure till the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 in April this year.
Appointed as Bangladesh’s ODI captain in June last year, Miraz has notably failed to live up to expectations as he managed only two wins in 13 matches played by the Tigers.
Also, Towhid Hridoy, who currently serves as Das’s deputy in T20Is, is expected to play the same role if handed over the reins of the ODI side as BCB sees the middle-order batsman as a future leadership prospect.
Citing BCB sources, the report said the body was initially considering handing Shando the ODI captaincy, which was taken away from him earlier, but backed off the idea in a bid to ensure the top-order batsman could focus on leading the red-ball side.
