KARACHI: Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam on Tuesday added the distinction of becoming the first player to score 500 runs in a single edition for the fourth time in Pakistan Super League (PSL) history.
The right-handed batsman set the benchmark in Zalmi’s PSL 11 qualifier against three-time champions Islamabad United at the National Bank Stadium here.
Babar entered the fixture with 485 runs in 10 innings and easily amassed 500 runs by hitting United’s Richard Gleeson for a boundary in the third over of Zalmi’s innings.
As a result, Babar has now breached the 500-run barrier in the only edition of the PSL, four times, surpassing his Rawalpindi counterpart Mohammad Rizwan, who achieved the feat thrice for Multan Sultans.
Babar Azam first scored 500-plus runs in a PSL edition for Karachi Kings in 2021, while all three of his came for Zalmi.
Apart from Babar and Rizwan, only Lahore Qalandars’ Faqar Zaman and another stalwart batsman Gusal Mendis have scored more than 500 runs in a PSL edition.
Meanwhile, the record for most runs in a season belongs to Fakhar, who amassed 588 runs in the 2022 edition.
