Former Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques has opted to switch his international allegiance from Australia to Portugal and will represent the country of his birth in the upcoming T20 World Cup qualifiers in August.
The 39-year-old has decided to renew his international career with his native Portugal before moving to Australia as a teenager.
Henriques played 44 internationals for Australia in various formats and was a regular feature in the national set-up over the years.
However, he has not represented Australia since 2021. With opportunities at the highest level limited, he has now opted to start a new chapter as Portugal begin their qualification campaign for the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Portugal’s tour begins with the European sub-regional qualifiers in Finland, the opening leg of the qualification route to the 2028 tournament co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Henriques became eligible to represent Portugal after the International Cricket Council’s mandatory three-year stand-down period required to move from a full member nation to an associate team. Having fulfilled the conditions, he is now free to represent the country of his birth.
One of Australia’s most decorated domestic and franchise cricketers, Henriques has won 11 major domestic titles including the Big Bash League, Indian Premier League and Champions League T20.
He enjoyed significant success with the Sydney Sixers, helping them win the inaugural BBL title in 2011–12 before guiding them to back-to-back championships in 2019–20 and 2020–21. He was also instrumental in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2016 title-winning campaign.
In domestic cricket, Henriques won five trophies with New South Wales, including the 2013–14 Sheffield Shield, three One Day Cup titles and the 2008–09 KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. He lifted the Champions League T20 twice with New South Wales in 2009 and Sydney Sixers in 2012.
