
BIRMINGHAM: India beat England by six wickets in the first match of the three-match series at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Opting to bat first, England got off to a flying start as openers Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethel put on 61 for the first wicket before the hosts slumped to 107-6 for 46.
However, Joe Root and Liam Dawson bounced back with resilient half-centuries as England were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs.
Root remained unbeaten on 76 with 6 fours and a six, while Dawson scored 68 off 83 balls with 68.
Duckett scored 43 off 45 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes while Will Jacks scored 20 off 19 balls with 3 fours. Bethel scored 14 runs off 31 balls including a boundary.
Captain Harry Brook was dismissed for just one run, while wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler managed just 5 off 14 balls. Sam Curran was out of the dugout facing three balls, while Jofra Archer added 12 runs off six balls, including a four and a six.
Axar Patel bowled for India at 4/62 in 9.5 overs. Kurnoor Brar and Prasith Krishna took 2 wickets each while Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dubey took one wicket each.
In reply, India chased down the 259-run target with ease, reaching 262-4 in 45.2 overs thanks to brilliant contributions from Gill, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.
Gill, who then retired, laid the foundations with a fluent 80 off 75 balls with 11 fours and a six.
Patel remained unbeaten on 57 off 52 balls with 5 fours and a six while Sundar added 4 fours and a top score of 52 off 63 balls.
Shreyas Iyer scored 35 off 53 balls while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli scored 11 and 5 respectively.
Archer, Josh Dungu and Sam Curran picked up a wicket each for England, but the rest of the bowlers went wicketless.
