Dhaka: All-rounder Mossadegh Hossain played as Bangladesh beat Australia by 86 runs (TLS method) in the first ODI of the three-match series, which started due to rain at the Sharee Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.
The result marked Bangladesh’s first ODI win against Australia, ending a 21-year wait since their previous win on 18 June 2005 during the NatWest series in Cardiff.
The match was eventually abandoned due to persistent rain, at which point Australia fell short of the DLS target, ensuring a winning start to the series for the hosts.
Batting first, Bangladesh posted 284-8 in the allotted 50 overs thanks to an unbeaten 86 from Mossadegh Hossain, who made the team’s strongest comeback since 2022. He hit 7 fours and 3 sixes off 70 balls.
Najmul Hossain Shando scored 67 off 86 balls with 9 fours and a six while Danzid Hasan added 54 off 44 balls. Dawhid Hridoi scored 31, and Taskin Ahmed made a late push with 20 off 16 balls.
Nathan Ellis took 3-38 for Australia, while Liam Scott, Matt Renshaw and Xavier Bartlett shared the rest of the wickets.
In reply, Bangladesh were restricted to 191-9 in 42.2 overs as Nahid Rana led a disciplined display of bowling.
Cameron Green scored 52 runs off 66 balls and Alex Carey scored 47 runs off 62 balls. Cooper Connolly added 35, but wickets fell at regular intervals as the visitors failed to form partnerships.
Nahid Rana took 4-41, while Mustafizur Rahman and Mosadeq Hossain took 2 wickets each. Taskin Ahmed also claimed a wicket to complete a dominant all-round display for the hosts.
