The Bangladesh government has appointed former national captain Tamim Iqbal as the new chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (PCB), following the dissolution of the Aminul Islam-led board of directors on Tuesday.

The decision was taken in response to the recommendations of a five-member inquiry panel that probed various allegations related to the PCB elections held in October last year.

At 37, Tamim became the youngest leader in the group’s history.

He will lead an 11-member ad hoc committee that includes former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin and former cricketer and TV commentator Athar Ali Khan.

Other members of the committee are Rashna Imam, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khasru, Tanjil Chaudhry, Salman Isfahani, Rafiqul Islam and Fahim Sinha.

The government’s inquiry team presented its findings during a press conference at the Sports Ministry, where it detailed its findings regarding the BCB election process.

Speaking on behalf of the council, NSC Sports Director Mohammad Aminul Ahesan elaborated on the steps taken to resolve the issue.

“As part of the responsibility of the National Sports Council, we have informed the ICC that this Board of Directors was not properly constituted and could not complete its work properly,” NSC Sports Director Mohammad Aminul Ahesan said.

“We have communicated our decision to dissolve this board of directors to the ICC. NSC plays a vital role in Bangladesh cricket or any sport in Bangladesh and on behalf of the government. So, we are confident about BCB and we think ICC will strongly support this decision,” he added.

Aminul Islam had said on Sunday that he was determined to continue as the BCB chairman despite reports of internal turmoil in the board and reports that a panel probing allegations of corruption and abuse of power had submitted its report to the government.

The BCB has faced mounting pressure from the sports ministry, which questioned the validity of the last board election, the absence of the national team in the recent T20 World Cup and allegations of political interference and favoritism within the board.

All four directors of the board resigned last week, bringing the total number of resignations since January this year to six.

Tamim is considered one of Bangladesh’s greatest batsmen, having played 391 international matches across all three formats, including 387 for his country.

He led Bangladesh to 21 wins in 38 matches, most notably a 2–1 ODI series win over South Africa in 2022. After his international retirement in early 2025, Tamim continued to feature in domestic cricket.

However, a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match that year brought an abrupt end to his playing career.

He later became a councilor of a Dhaka-based cricket club and announced his candidacy for the directorship of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (PCB) in the 2025 elections.

Tamim later withdrew from the contest, alleging abuse of power in the election process by the then PCB president Aminul Islam.
