Mumbai: Two-time champions West Indies cruised to a resounding 107-run win over Zimbabwe in their Group 1 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Batting first, West Indies posted their second highest T20 World Cup total as they amassed 254/6 in 20 overs thanks to half-centuries from Shimron Hedmyer and Rovman Powell.
Hetmyer was the top scorer with a swashbuckling 85 off 34 balls with 7 fours and several sixes, while Powell scored 59 off 35 balls with the help of 8 fours including 4 sixes.
Middle-order batsmen Shefan Rutherford and Romario Shepherd added valuable runs at the back, scoring 31 not out and 21 runs respectively.
For Zimbabwe, Richard Nagarava and Blessing Musarabani took 2 wickets each while Graeme Creamer and Brad Evans took one wicket each.
Chasing a target of 255, Zimbabwe’s batting line-up crumbled under the scoreboard pressure and managed to amass 147 runs in 17.4 overs.
Evans led the Chevrons with a solitary 43 off 21 balls, while Dion Myers (28), skipper Sikandar Raza (27) and Tony Munyonga (14) all chipped in with double figures.
Moti led the West Indies bowling with frugal bowling figures of 4/28 from his four overs, followed by fellow spinner Akhil Hossain who took three wickets, while Matthew Ford claimed two scalps.
A 107-run win in the first Super Eight match of the 2026 T20 World Cup helped West Indies beat South Africa to top Group 1 thanks to a superior net run rate of 5.35 compared to the Proteas’ 3.80.
| Teams | Competitions | succeeds | Losses | points | Net flow rate |
| West Indies | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 5.35 |
| South Africa | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 3.80 |
| India | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | -3.80 |
| Zimbabwe | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | -5.35 |
Zimbabwe, on the other hand, succumbed to the bottom with a negative net run rate of 5.35, their net run rate dropping to a disappointing 3.8 following their shock loss to South Africa.
The heavy defeats have dented the semi-final hopes of both India and Zimbabwe considerably, as they need to win the remaining two matches of the Super Eights outright to improve their net run rate, gain crucial points.
The Group 1 clash between West Indies and South Africa in Ahmedabad on Thursday will further define the future of Group 1 as a win for the two-time champions will further mar the respective campaigns of India and Zimbabwe.
