Colombo: Pakistan is ready to make changes in the final group-stage clash against Namibia in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with several senior players likely to be rested, according to reports. Jio News Monday.
The crucial match is at the Sinhala Sports Club Cricket Ground on Wednesday and a win is essential for the 2009 champions to secure their place in the Super Eight stage.
However, even a rain-affected result would be enough to see them progress.
According to sources, the team management is frustrated with the lackluster performances of some of the popular names in the side during recent outings.
As a result, discussions are understood to center around the possibility of resting key players like Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi for the Namibia clash.
Between two and three changes to the playing XI are being contemplated, with a heavy emphasis on using bench strength to inject fresh energy into the side.
The team management has already started strategizing for the must-win match, although the players have been given a rest day today, a team spokesperson said.
Speculation of changes followed a disappointing performance with both bat and ball against arch-rivals India on Sunday.
Opting to bat first on a spin-friendly surface, Pakistan’s strategy was bolstered by Ishan Kishan’s magnificent half-century to power India to 175 for 5.
The spin attack, which had pinned its hopes on the side, endured a tough afternoon. Abrar Ahmed conceded 38 runs in his three overs, while Shatab Khan was taken for 17 runs in one over; Couldn’t take a single wicket.
Captain Salman Ali Agha later described the performance as an “off-day”. Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the bowlers, returning one wicket for 31 runs in his two overs.
In reply, Pakistan’s batting line-up crumbled under the pressure of the chase, collapsing for just 114 in 18 overs after a disastrous start to their innings.
