KARACHI: The Rawalpindi franchise on Sunday announced the team name ahead of the much-anticipated 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) scheduled to be played from March 26 to May 3.
The franchise, now named ‘Bintis’, was acquired by Wally Technologies for Rs 2.45 billion in a historic auction at the Expo Center in Lahore earlier this month.
The franchise’s name was unveiled with a 25-second long video featuring famous landmarks of the city, with upbeat music playing in the background.
“Here’s the official franchise name of Team Rawalpindi. We’re bold. We’re challenging. We’re bringing the vibe. We’re changing the game,” the franchise captioned the video.
The franchise announced that it would soon unveil the logo, “Next: The Official Team Logo.” Also, the video ended with the text “To be continued”.
The franchise, dubbed Multan Sultans, came up for auction after its previous owner, Ali Tareen, decided against renewing the decade-long franchise deal after the landmark 10th edition of the marquee league last year.
As a result, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) temporarily assumed control of the franchise, with its chairman Mohsin Naqvi announcing that the cricket board would oversee the affairs of the former champions for the historic 11th marquee league featuring eight teams.
Meanwhile, after successful bids by two new franchises, Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen and Sialkot Stallions, FKS Group and OZ Developers, respectively, bought Rs. 1.75 billion and Rs. Acquired for 1.85 billion.
As a result, the PCB issued an advertisement last month to attract interested parties and formally invited bids for the franchise.
Wally Technologies later bought the franchise in a blistering bid following a bidding war, most notably with the second highest bid by CD Ventures, but was eventually forced to bow out.
As the winning party allowed the franchise to be renamed, its owner, Ahsan Tahir, decided to exercise the franchise and announced that the franchise would be named after Rawalpindi.
