LAHORE: The 11th season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) begins on Thursday at the Gaddafi Stadium, where defending champions Lahore Qalandars will face newcomers Hyderabad Kingsmen in the opening match.
This season’s PSL will be expanded to eight teams and will be played across Lahore and Karachi.
For the first time, the tournament features eight franchises Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindis, with Multan Sultans coming under new management after initially being announced as Sialkot Stallions.
The opening game was established against new competition.
The Shaheen Shah Afridi-led Qalandars enter PSL 11 with momentum, having won three of the last four titles. Their biggest strength is their pace attack consisting of Afridi, Haris Rauf and Mustafizur Rahman.
With Abdullah Shafiq and Faqar Zaman anchoring the batting and Sikandar Raza providing all-round brilliance, they are well set to defend their crown.
Owned by American-Pakistani businessman Fawad Sarwar, Kingsman debuts with a star-studded line-up. Captain Marnus Labuschagne is joined by Glenn Maxwell, Riley Meredith, Gusal Perera and Sime Ayub.
Their batting unit is strong, but their pace attack looks thin after Odneil Bartman’s exit, leaving Meredith as the only overseas specialist pacer.
The defending champions will have their captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi—their inspirational leader and strike bowler—and all-rounder Sikandar Raza, who will bring match-winning ability.
Kingsman Sime Ayub, whose explosive young talent bolsters the team’s line-up and Glenn Maxwell, will provide an X-factor with bat, ball and fielding acumen.
The toss is important as chasing at the Gaddafi Stadium has historically been favored. The pitch is expected to be batting friendly, with early support for fast bowlers and some spin later in the game.
Weather conditions are clear, with temperatures between 20°C and 28°C, ensuring ideal playing conditions.
This landmark season has a sobering reality: matches will be played in empty stadiums.
For those who don’t know, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revised its logistical plans, restricting all matches in Karachi and Lahore behind closed doors under the government’s austerity measures.
This marks a departure from the original schedule which included places like Multan, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the decision was taken after consultation with the owners and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Lahore will host Eliminators 1 and 2 and the finals, while Karachi is set for the qualifiers. There is no change in the opening match between Hyderabad Kingsmen and Lahore Qalandars.
With the matches being held without spectators, the organizers have promised enhanced broadcast and production features to enhance the viewing experience for fans in Pakistan and around the world.
