LAHORE: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has introduced a significant playing condition amendment for its 2026 season, allowing captains to submit two separate team sheets ahead of the toss in a bid to mitigate the often decisive impact of the toss.

The new rule was unveiled when defending champions Lahore Qalandars faced Hyderabad Kingsmen in the opening match of the tournament in Lahore.

Before the toss, the two captains, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Marnes Labuschagne, presented two different line-ups to the match umpire.

This arrangement comes under 1.2.1 of the PSL’s Playing Conditions, which states: “Before the toss, each captain may submit two (2) different XI lineups in writing to the PSL Match Referee.

Each line-up shall consist of 11 players and a maximum of 4 substitute fielders… After the toss, each captain shall finalize one of the two line-ups submitted by signing the selected team sheet.

Once the final line-up has been prescribed, no player listed in the selected playing eleven can be changed without the permission of the opposing captain before the start of the match.

The change is widely seen as a progressive attempt to neutralize the advantage of the toss, especially in night matches where ice can greatly influence the outcome.

In such situations, the ball becomes slippery, making it difficult for the spinners to catch and rendering them ineffective at many times during the second innings.

The new rule allows teams to adapt their playing elevens to match conditions: a side batting first can choose an extra fast bowler instead of a spinner, while a side bowling second can choose to strengthen its batting line-up.

However, early in the season, it didn’t snow, and continued wind and cloud cover kept things dry throughout the evening.

In the tournament itself, three-time champions Lahore Qalandars started their title defense in convincing fashion with a 69-run win over Kingsmen.

Batting first, Callanders scored 199 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. Left-arm opener Faqar Zaman scored a blistering half-century of 53 off 39 balls including 10 fours.

He received solid support from fellow opener Mohammad Naeem, who gave away a 19-ball 30, while wicketkeeper-batsman Hasibullah Khan (28 off 40) and Sikandar Raza (24 off 10 balls) provided a powerful finish.

In reply, the Hyderabad Kingsmen were bowled out for 130, with the Qalandars’ pace attack doing the damage. Haris Rauf, Ubaid Shah, Shaheen Afridi and Mustafizur Rahman all impressed, while Sikandar Raza was caught in the spin.
