AHMEDABAD: Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group D clash against South Africa.
Nabi was found to have breached ICC Code of Conduct 2.4 for players and player support personnel, which covers “disobeying the referee’s instructions during an international match”.
The incident occurred at the start of the 14th over of Afghanistan’s innings when Nabi got into an argument with the umpires over a wristband worn by South African pacer Lungi Ngidi.
The match ended in a nail-biting finish with South Africa narrowly winning following two dramatic super overs.
Veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj held his nerve in the second Super Over to guide South Africa to a thrilling victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday.
Batting first, South Africa scored 187 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. Quinton de Kock (41 off 59 balls) and Ryan Rickelton (61 off 28) scored half-centuries, with Rickelton finishing as the top scorer.
Chasing 188 runs, Afghanistan reached the target of 187 runs in 19.4 overs.
For Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 84 runs off 42 balls including 7 sixes and 4 fours, while Umarzai scored 22 off 17 balls.
In the first super over, Nkiti relied on South Africa’s bowling but Omarzai hit two sixes and a boundary to make it 17/0.
Rashid Khan handed the ball to Farooqui, who failed to defend the total as Tristan Stubbs hit a six off the last ball to force a second super over.
In the end, Stubbs and David Miller made it 23/0 for South Africa off the bowling of Omarzai, with Afghanistan set a target of 24 runs. Maharaj struck early, dismissing Nabi on the second ball that brought Gurbaz to the crease.
The wicketkeeper-batsman turned the game on its head with three consecutive sixes as Afghanistan needed a six off the last ball, but eventually South Africa held their nerve to seal a dramatic win.
