Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remaining ODI series against New Zealand.

Sundar suffered an injury during New Zealand’s first innings and was forced to leave the field after bowling five overs. He then returned to bat at number 8 behind Harshit Rana, but struggled when running between the wickets.

In a brief partnership with KL Rahul, Sundar scored seven runs off seven balls as Rahul hit two fours and a six in the 49th over to lead India to victory.

After India’s win, KL Rahul spoke about Sundar’s performance and the challenges he faced due to injury.

He praised Sundar’s resilience and explained the team’s strategic approach while he was in Greece, stressing the importance of managing the situation carefully rather than taking unnecessary risks.

“I know he had a little injury in the first innings but I didn’t know the extent. He hit the ball well and when he came in, we were already going for a run-a-ball, so there was no need to take unnecessary risks. He rotated the strike and did his job,” Rahul said.

“Washington Sundar has a stroke. He felt pain while batting. Our medical team will evaluate him and give updates,” he added.

Sundar became the second Indian player to miss part of the ODI series after Rishabh Pant was ruled out due to a torn oblique muscle suffered during training ahead of the first ODI in Vadodara.

Dhruv Jural has replaced Bunt in the squad, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce Sundar’s replacement soon.

Currently, India lead 1-0 in the three-match ODI series, with the second match scheduled to be played in Rajkot on Wednesday.
