Australia’s veteran opening batsman Usman Khawaja is set to talk about his future in Test cricket ahead of the fifth and final Ashes Test against England, The Australian reports.
Ahead of the series-deciding Test match, Khawaja is expected to hold a press conference to clarify his plans.
The 39-year-old has endured a challenging spell in the longest form in the last two years. In 2025, he scored 614 runs in 18 innings, including a century and a half-century, at an average of 36.11.
His only century against Sri Lanka during Australia’s January–February tour was when he scored 232 in the first innings of the opening Test.
Khawaja is struggling for form and fitness in the ongoing Ashes series. He missed the Brisbane Test and was first out of the Adelaide Test, returning to bat only at No.4 due to Steve Smith’s unwellness.
In the fourth Test, he batted in the middle order alongside Travis Head and Jack Weatherold, scoring 29 off 52 balls in both innings. He did not bat in the second innings of the Perth Test due to back pain.
So far in the series, Khawaja has scored 153 runs in three matches and five innings, including a half-century in Adelaide, at an average of 30.60.
Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan recently urged Khawaja to control his own destiny and end his career on his own terms.
“Don’t let them decide. You decide your own destiny. Usman has had an incredible career and not many people get the chance to say goodbye on their own terms in their own place,” Vaughan said.
“If he has the energy and will to fight, I can see it happening. But an exit from Sydney during the Ashes seems like a fitting farewell,” he added.
