BEIRUT: Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief executive Wasim Khan has been appointed as the managing director of FIFA Asia and will officially take over in January 2027, the Basketball World Governing Body’s regional office has announced.
Khan, who stepped down as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) general manager of cricket earlier this year, has already been appointed managing director at FIBA Asia, starting a comprehensive handover process to succeed outgoing managing director Hakob Ghazirian.
As Executive Director of FIBA Asia, Khan will oversee the development and management of basketball across the continent with 44 National Federations under his supervision.
A British-Pakistani sports administrator, Khan brings extensive experience in sports management, having held senior leadership positions across cricket.
Before joining the ICC, he served as the chief executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board from 2019 until his resignation in September 2021.
During his tenure, he oversaw cricket operations through a pivotal period for Pakistan cricket, was instrumental in the return of major touring teams and led the restructuring of the country’s domestic cricket system.
During his managerial career he also served as Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Cricket Club and England-based youth cricket charity Chance to Shine.
FIBA said Khan has already started working with the organization to ensure a smooth transition to carry out a comprehensive handover to Qazirian before he formally takes over in January 2027.
The appointment marks Khan’s move from international cricket management to global basketball management, making him one of the few sports executives of Pakistani origin to hold senior management positions in two major international sports organizations.
