KARACHI: After the installation of new courts at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Pakistan’s national cricketers will have to play padel as part of long-term training camps, Director High Performance Akib Javed has said.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has introduced pedal facilities at the NCA, allowing players to enjoy the game alongside their cricket training without having to travel elsewhere.
The initiative aims to improve the fitness of players and provide a more engaging environment during extended training camps.

He explained that the initiative is designed to improve players’ fitness, improve their overall development and create a more productive environment during long training camps.
“Earlier, players had to travel to play padel, but that is no longer the case. We want to provide the environment and facilities to help improve the overall performance of the players during long camps,” he said.
Akib revealed that padel play is mandatory every day during the long training camps, with players expected to spend around 40 minutes on the court.
“It is not necessary for players to play cricket during long camps. Patel is mandatory every alternate day. The game improves fitness while its movement patterns are directly linked to fielding, which is very beneficial for cricketers,” he explained.
The former Pakistan fast bowler added that the PCB is planning to expand sports and recreational facilities at the National Cricket Academy as part of its long-term high-performance plan.
He emphasized that exposing players to various sports and leisure activities will not only improve their athletic skills but also help maintain their mental freshness and overall well-being during extended training camps.
“Basketball will also benefit cricketers, and we are setting up playrooms with snooker and other indoor games. All over the world, professional sportspeople don’t just play their primary sport; they also participate in other sports and activities that contribute to their overall development,” added Aqib.
