London: India assistant coach Ryan ten Toske is reportedly mulling to step down from his post, with the third and final one-day international (ODI) against England on July 19 set to be his final assignment for the national team.
According to reports, the former Netherlands all-rounder has expressed his desire to quit to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and has requested to be relieved of his duties.
Reports also indicate that any departure is expected to be amicable, with both parties parting ways on mutually agreed terms, rather than his decision being purely driven by personal dissatisfaction with the role.
Ten Toskate joined India’s coaching staff two years ago after being recommended by head coach Gautam Gambhir. His initial contract with the BCCI is understood to have expired recently, with his tenure believed to have ended between July 12 and 14.
India are currently touring England and if the BCCI and Gambhir accept his request, he is expected to leave the team following the conclusion of the ODI series at Lord’s.
The 45-year-old is believed to have made the decision to spend more time with his family in London. With three young sons and his wife working, he wants a training role that requires less travel and allows for a better work-life balance.
Another factor is perceived overlap in training responsibilities. Batu Dosket’s primary area of expertise is fielding, with India’s fielding coach D Dileep already overseeing the department and limiting his involvement in that aspect to the team’s preparations.
Despite this, Ten Tosgate enjoys a strong working relationship with Gambhir, who has often praised his contribution and was instrumental in bringing him into the national set-up after becoming India’s head coach.
Reports suggest that Gambhir Batu values Toskett’s input in several areas, especially as India continue to look for consistency in their operations and may try to persuade him to stay with the coaching staff.
However, barring a change of heart, the third ODI against England is expected to mark the end of Batu Toskett’s two-year stint with the Indian team.
