Durham: England white-ball captain Harry Brooke on Tuesday expressed his desire to lead the Three Lions in Test matches, saying it would be a great honor and privilege.

England are considering appointing a new Test captain following the shock retirement of veteran all-rounder Ben Stokes, midway through the third and final Test against New Zealand, which the visitors eventually won 2-1.

Brooke, who has served as Stokes’ back-up since the start of last winter’s Ashes series, was overlooked for the captaincy role when the all-rounder missed out on the second Test of the recently concluded series, with the latter’s predecessor Joe Root given the interim role instead.

Earlier this week, Stokes expressed his disagreement with the decision to replace Brooke as captain in the second Test against New Zealand, whom he backed as England’s full-time Test captain.

As a result, the matter was brought up when Brooke addressed a press conference ahead of the five-match T20I series against defending champions India.

In response the 27-year-old shared that he would be “happy to take” the England Test captaincy if offered, but insisted the decision was not his alone.

“Look, it’s a great honor to do that,” Brooks said Tuesday. “It would be a privilege to captain England at the highest form and peak of our game.

“Playing Test cricket is the biggest thing I’ve done in my life, it’s a dream, something I’ve always wanted to do since I spoke. It’s not my choice, that’s the decision, but if it’s offered to me, I’ll be happy to take it.”
