
ANTIGUA: Amir Jangoo’s brilliant double century and Khmer Roach’s fiery bowling led West Indies to an innings and 217-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound on Sunday.
Batting first, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 308 runs in 71.5 overs despite captain Dhananjaya de Silva’s 120 off 168 balls including 17 fours.
Dinesh Chandimal scored 54 runs off 67 balls with 8 fours and Sonal Dinusha scored 43 runs off 75 balls with 6 fours. Milan Ratnayake added 27 runs off 52 balls with 3 fours while opener Nishan Madushka scored 23 off 27 balls.
Justin Greaves was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with figures of 3/39 in 11 overs. Shamar Joseph, Alzari Joseph and Camer Roach took 2 wickets each and Jayden Seals took one wicket.
West Indies started their first innings with only an over without a score due to rain on the second day of play.
The hosts, who were 271-5 in 84 overs at the end of the second day, eventually declared at 626-9 in 160.5 overs thanks to Amir Jangoo’s sensational 233.
The left-hander faced 373 balls and hit 19 fours and 3 sixes. Captain Roston Chase narrowly missed out on a double century with 194 off 324 balls, including 13 fours and 2 sixes. Openers John Campbell and Brandon King contributed 39 and 31 respectively.
Milan Ratnayake was Sri Lanka’s top bowler with figures of 5/124 in 35.5 overs, with Asitha Fernando and Sonal Dinusha picking up two wickets each.
Trailing by 318 runs, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 101 in 31.2 overs, with only Dinesh Chandimal and Sonal Dinusha reaching double figures.
Chandimal top scored with 43 runs off 60 balls including 5 fours while Dinusha scored 12 runs off 29 balls with 3 fours.
Kemar Roach led the West Indies bowling with impressive figures of 4/51 in 11 overs. Jayden Seals took three wickets, Shamar Joseph took two wickets and Alzari Joseph one wicket as the Caribbean side dominated to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
