Nottingham: New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham etched their names in history with a 317-run stand at Trent Bridge on the first day of the third and final Test against England on Wednesday.
After New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and elected to bat first, he teamed up with his opening partner Devon Conway to dismantle England’s bowling and put on a 317-run partnership during which both batsmen scored their respective centuries.
In the end, England captain Ben Stokes was caught by his New Zealand counterpart on the first delivery of the 73rd over. Latham was out after scoring 151 off 214 balls with 15 boundaries.
On the other hand, Conway followed suit exactly one over later as Joe Root caught him at long-on. He was New Zealand’s highest scorer with 157 runs off 224 balls with 22 fours and 3 sixes.
As a result, Conway and Latham became the first New Zealand pair to post a 300-plus partnership for any wicket against England in Tests.
The previous record for the highest partnership by a New Zealand pair against England was 276 runs, set by Stevie Dempster and Jackie Mills for the first wicket during the Wellington Test in 1930.
