Dublin: Ireland suffered a major setback to their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign after right-arm fast bowler Ava Canning was ruled out of the rest of the tournament due to injury.
According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), Canning, who took 10 not out in Ireland’s 40-run defeat in the campaign opener against Scotland, suffered a stress fracture in his back.
The 22-year-old has consequently been replaced by fellow seamer Jane Maguire following the approval of the ICC Incident Technical Committee.
“The Event Technical Committee for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has approved Jane Maguire as a replacement for Ava Canning in the Ireland squad,” the apex body said in a statement.
“When Canning was ruled out with a stress fracture in his back, Maguire was named as his replacement.
“Substitution of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the substitute is officially added to the team.”
Ireland are currently bottom of the Group 2 standings following defeats against Scotland and England respectively in their first two matches of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
They next face defending champions New Zealand in Hampshire on June 19, while the remaining group-stage games are scheduled against Sri Lanka and the West Indies on June 23 and 27 respectively.
