Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined Pakistan for their opening match against arch-rivals India in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign opener at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Sunday.
The sanction was imposed by Trudy Anderson of the ICC International Match Umpires Committee, who fined the green shirts five per cent of their match fee after they were adjudged to have gone one over short of the target after time allowances were considered.
As per the ICC Code of Conduct on Minimum Over Rate Offenses and Rule 2.22 for Players and Player Support Personnel, players who fail to bowl within the allotted time will be fined five percent of the match fee for each over.
Pakistan captain Fatima Sana accepted the charge after on-field umpires Claire Polosak and Jacqueline Williams, third umpire Eloise Sheridan and fourth umpire Sue Redfern made the charge, removing the need for a formal investigation.
The penalty adds to Pakistan’s woes as they suffered a heavy 64-run defeat at the hands of arch-rivals India in the opening match of the 12-team tournament.
Opting to bat first in the high-octane match, India managed to amass 170 for 6 in 20 overs thanks to Smriti Mandhana’s half-century and 34 runs from back-order wicket-keeper batsman Richa Ghosh.
In reply, Pakistan could muster 106 runs before being all out in 17 overs, despite their opener Muneefa Ali scoring 41 runs.
Apart from him, Alia Riaz (18) and her fellow top-order batsmen, Gul Feroza and Ayesha Jafar, 12 each, could collect five wickets against a ruthless Indian bowling attack led by Deepti Sharma.
