Australia have included uncapped off-spinner Nikhil Choudhary for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, giving the 30-year-old a chance to make his international debut.
Chowdhury, who is yet to represent Australia at senior international level, earned his call-up after a string of impressive performances in domestic cricket.
The bowling all-rounder has been a key figure for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (PBL) and was also part of the Delhi Capitals setup in the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Chowdhury, who was born in Delhi before moving to Australia in the early 2010s, would become the first Indian-born player to represent the Australian men’s team in more than six decades if selected during the Bangladesh tour.
He has been included in the squad as a replacement for star batsman Travis Head. Australian selector Tony Todmaid praised Chaudhry’s recent development and backed him to make an impact if given the chance.
“Nickle has been a player of national interest for some time. He’s been a player-in-waiting for this tour, joining the squad at the pre-season camps in Brisbane and coming in as a replacement for Travis Head,” Todmid said.
“The team was particularly impressed by his PPL form last season, which led to his inclusion in the squad. He has also been a part of Delhi Capitals’ setup in the IPL this year.
“Nickil will gain invaluable experience in Bangladesh and make his debut for Australia when we sit down to pick the squad for the inaugural T20 here next week.”
The series will begin at Chattogram on June 17, while the remaining matches are scheduled for June 19 and 21 at the same venue.
Updated Australian squad: Mitchell Marsh (catch), Xavier Bartlett, Nikhil Choudhary, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Joel Davies, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardy, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Matthew Kuhneman, Riley Meredith, Josh Phillippe, Javtamba Atutamba and.
