Mirpur: Australia created unnecessary history in the 50-over format by losing the first three wickets without a run in the second ODI against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.

Batting first, the tourists suffered a dramatic top-order collapse, with openers Matthew Short, Cooper Connolly and Matt Renshaw getting out, leaving Australia reeling at 0-3 in the opening overs.

This is the first time in Australia’s 55-year ODI history that the first three wickets have fallen without a run being scored.

Taskin Ahmed struck in the opening over, removing Short in the fourth ball, while Mustafizur Rahman took the wickets of Connolly and Renshaw to deepen the early damage.

Australia became only the fourth team in ODI history to lose their first three wickets overall.

Teams to lose first three wickets for zero runs:

  • Pakistan vs New Zealand (Birmingham, 1983)
  • Pakistan vs South Africa (Lahore, 1997)
  • Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka (Pietermaritzburg, 2003)
  • Australia vs Bangladesh (Mirpur, 2026)

The most famous event was Sri Lanka’s Saminda Vaas’ first-over hat-trick against Bangladesh in Pietermaritzburg during the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

Despite the historic slump, Australia have tried to rebuild through the middle order. Meanwhile, Bangladesh are aiming for their second straight win in the series after winning the rain-affected first ODI in Dhaka by 86 runs on Tuesday.

At the time of filing this report, Australia’s innings was hampered by rain at 187-8 in 42 overs.

Marnus Labuschagne remained unbeaten on 55 off 85 balls with 3 fours, while Nathan Ellis remained unbeaten on 2.

Xavier Bartlett scored a valuable 52 off 48 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes while captain Josh Inglis added 34 off 38 balls.
