Dhaka: Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (PCB) following elections held in Dhaka on Sunday.

Tamim, who was the only candidate for this post, will hold office for four years. He had already been acting as the chairman of the ad hoc committee for the past two months ahead of his formal election.

The Bangladesh government called for a new BCB election under an interim arrangement in April after the previous elected board headed by Aminul Islam was dissolved.

The day-long polling process, which included both in-person voting and electronic voting, was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, which serves as the board’s headquarters.

A total of 23 directors were elected across the three divisions, with two government-nominated representatives later added to complete the 25-member board.

The Election Commission said that 88 votes were cast to elect 23 directors in two of the three divisions.

The first category includes regional and district representatives, the second includes Dhaka-based clubs competing in the domestic league system, and the third includes former cricketers, captains and nominees of the Board of Education. Tamim was one of the 12 directors selected from the second category.

Once the board was formed, its members held an internal vote to elect a chairman and two vice-chairmen. Following Tamim’s election as president, Fahim Sinha was chosen as one of the vice-presidents, while the second vice-president is yet to be confirmed.

The previous PCB elections were held on October 6 last year and Aminul was re-elected in controversial circumstances. At that time, Tamim, who led the opposition team, withdrew from the competition citing discrimination and malpractice.

One of Bangladesh’s most prominent cricketers, Tamim has played 391 international matches across all formats. As captain, he led Bangladesh to 21 wins in 38 matches, including a remarkable 2-1 ODI series win over South Africa in 2022.

He retired from international cricket in early 2025 but continued to play domestic cricket until he suffered a heart attack during the Dhaka Premier League match that year.
