Melbourne: Australia have announced their squads for the upcoming white-ball tour of Bangladesh, with Travis Head set to miss the entire tour as he has been granted personal leave for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Captain Mitchell Marsh has also been ruled out of the ODI series as he recovers from an ankle injury sustained during Australia’s recent tour of Pakistan.
Leg-spinner Tanvir Sangha has been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained in Pakistan and has been replaced by off-spinner Todd Murphy, who earned his first white-ball call-up.
Matt Short and Ollie Peake have retained their places in the squad after performing well during the Pakistan tour.
Pakistan did not get a head start for the series as they played Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL playoffs.
Although initially picked in both Australia’s ODI and T20I squads for Bangladesh, he will now be rested from the entire tour as selectors carefully manage his workload ahead of a busy international schedule.
“Travis was originally selected for the ODI and T20I legs of this Bangladesh tour, but was later given personal leave for both,” said national selector Tony Todmaid.
“We look forward to seeing him again in a great Test series against Bangladesh.”
Marsh made a late withdrawal from the Pakistan series due to an ankle sprain sustained during the IPL. While Australia was confident that he would be fit for the full Bangladesh tour, he is now targeting a return for the T20I series starting on June 17.
In the absence of Marsh and Head, Josh Inglis will continue as captain after leading Australia in Pakistan. Official ODI captain Pat Cummins has also been rested for the Bangladesh tour. Inglis is expected to captain the T20 side if Marsh fails to recover in time.
Short and Peake were initially selected only for the ODI leg of the Pakistan tour but put in encouraging performances, especially in the second ODI win over Australia. Peek also became the youngest specialist batsman to make his ODI debut for Australia.
“We were hoping that Mitch Marsh would be available for the Bangladesh ODI series, although he is working his way back to full fitness from an ankle injury,” Todmid said. “Mitch will join the team in Dhaka to begin preparations for the T20 series.
“We are delighted to welcome Todd Murphy back into the ODI squad for the first time, while it made sense for Ollie Peake and Matt Short to remain in the squad following the Pakistan tour.”
Murphy, who played seven Tests for Australia, returned to Cricket Australia’s central contract list earlier this year after being recalled during the Ashes campaign, but was unable to earn a regular place in the playing XI.
Australia pacers Xavier Bartlett and Ben Duvarshuis will welcome back for the ODI series after missing the Pakistan tour due to their expected engagement in the IPL playoffs with Punjab Kings.
However, as Punjab Kings failed to qualify for the playoffs, both players returned to Australia before joining the team in Bangladesh.
Billy Stanlake and Riley Meredith have been replaced by Bartlett and Dwarshuis in the ODI squad, although Meredith will be part of Australia’s T20I squad for the tour.
