KARACHI: Former national cricketer Haroon Rashid has insisted that constant change of leadership has prevented Pakistan from achieving stability in the fast-growing modern cricket.
Having served the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in several roles, including chief selector and coach of the junior and senior teams, Rashid reflected on the struggles of the green shirts in international cricket.
Pakistan’s second consecutive clean sweep against Bangladesh has cast doubts over the future of Shaun Masood as captain, with reports suggesting that all-rounder Salman Ali Agha is being considered to follow the veteran top-order batsman.
Meanwhile, Rashid, who has represented Pakistan in 23 Tests and 12 ODIs, insisted that the management should appoint a captain after full consultation in any format.
“If you decide to appoint a captain in any format, it’s done with a very thought process, so how can you keep changing captains and allow the Pakistan team to be consistent and consistent?” Rashid raised the question during an interview with a local website.
The former top-order batsman added that Pakistan had historically done well under captains with long tenures, before warning that if young cricketers were not properly groomed, they would “fall further behind”.
“A lot of things need to be put right in Pakistan cricket. Otherwise we will lag further behind. Because we are not nurturing our young talent properly or giving them proper training and exposure to prepare them for long-term international cricket.”
