Sylhet: Top-order batsman Shaun Masood is expected to step down as Pakistan’s Test captain following a 78-run defeat in the last Test in a historic 2-0 series whitewash to Bangladesh at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Shaun Masood, appointed as Pakistan’s red-ball captain in 2023 ahead of the three-match Test series against Australia, began his tenure with a 3-0 series defeat in his first assignment Down Under.

Overall, Masood has led Pakistan in 16 Tests, winning four and losing 12, with a success rate of 25 per cent.

Meanwhile, during the post-match press conference, Masood outlined his broader vision for Pakistan’s red-ball cricket, insisting his focus remains on strengthening the Test system rather than chasing short-term results.

He also acknowledged that the final decisions regarding team composition and strategy rest with the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The 36-year-old reiterated that his role in Test cricket has always been driven by a commitment to raising standards and ensuring meaningful progress in the team environment, rather than opting for quick fixes.

“I have a clear mind. If I take a role in Test cricket, it is to improve Test cricket. Some things have to be discussed and discussed with the board and the final decision is always with the board. My thought and aim is always to find ways to improve this team. You always have to accept challenges and embrace opportunities,” Masood said.

Emphasizing his commitment to Pakistan cricket beyond his leadership responsibilities, Masood said his attitude remains the same regardless of his position within the side. He outlined that representing the national team is always an honor and a duty.

“At any stage my effort will be the same. There is no need to sit in the captain’s chair or talk only as a player. We never know where life will take us. Whatever the situation, this is my attitude. I wear this shirt with great pride and I have put everything aside for it,” he said.

He further highlighted the demanding nature of Test cricket, noting that even small mistakes can prove costly during the five-day tournament. Masood insisted on greater discipline and attention to detail in all departments.

“Rather than change, the focus should be on what can be improved and what mistakes can be reduced. Because, as I said earlier, there is no margin for error in Test cricket. In a five-day game, these mistakes become very costly,” he concluded.
