MUMBAI: Jasprit Bumrah has retired from the long form and named the vice-captain of the 15-man Test squad led by KL Rahul Shubman Gill as India announced its squad for the one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in June.
The series marks India’s return to Test cricket after a 2-0 loss to South Africa last November. Along with Bumrah, left-arm spin all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel and fast bowler Akash Deep were notably omitted from the squad.
A number of new faces have received Test recognition with left-arm spinner Manav Sudhar and fast bowler Kurnoor Brar getting their first call-ups. Another left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey has also been included in the squad.
For the ODI series, pacers Prince Yadav, Kurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey have received their first call-ups.
The arrival of Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya add depth to the squad, while Dhruv Jural, Ayush Padoni, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshid Rana and Mohammad Siraj missed out from the squad that lost the 2-1 ODI series against New Zealand in January.
Jadeja made a push towards the latter stages of IPL 2026, while Rana and Akash Deep were sidelined for the entire season due to injury concerns.
The Test will be played in New Chandigarh from June 6 to 10, followed by three ODIs in Dharamsala, Lucknow and Chennai on June 14, 17 and 20 respectively.
India and Afghanistan have met only once before in Test cricket in Bengaluru in 2018 when India won by an innings and 262 runs over two days.
