Former England captain Michael Vaughan questioned England’s selection decisions after Jofra Archer was left out of the squad for the opening Test of the domestic summer against the New Zealand national cricket team while continuing his Indian Premier League (IPL) duties with Rajasthan Royals.
Vaughan expressed his surprise at Archer’s absence, pointing to what he described as an ongoing conflict between franchise obligations and international cricket priorities.
“I am sure he will be in the squad (for the second Test). It will come in mid-June. I think we have a problem in English cricket at the moment with Jofra staying for the entire IPL,” Vaughan said.
He further highlighted the existing arrangement between the England and Wales Cricket Board (England and Wales Cricket Board) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Board of Control for Cricket in India).
“There’s some deal the ECB has with the BCCI that allows all our players to stay for a period. So I have a problem with England’s contracts because Jofra has been looked after by them for a few years on a very handsome contract. So who’s the key? I believe the international contract is more than any right,” he said.
Vaughan argued that central contracts should take precedence over license agreements, especially when it comes to Test cricket.
“Look, all these franchise leagues are fantastic. I love them for the players. But if you start putting domestic leagues over a Test match, I think there’s a real problem now.”
He stressed that England should always prioritize fielding their strongest XI.
“England has to make a decision, because a lot of people have talked about it in the last week, because if you’re playing for England in your Test match, we think the players should play for England. That’s what your central contract says you have to do. I’m the director of cricket, Rob Key, or Brendan McCullum, coach Brendan McCullum, the first Test bowler against Lord’s,” Vaughan said.
The debate over franchise and international cricket continues to grow, with former England captain Sir Alastair Cook suggesting Jacob Bethel should return to county cricket ahead of franchise duties.
Archer is expected to feature in the remaining IPL matches for Rajasthan Royals, with the possibility of additional matches if they reach the playoffs.
England begin the three-match Test series against New Zealand on June 4, a few days after the IPL final.
